James Chang, MD
Associate Executive Director
Dr. Chang has been an associate executive director of The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) since 2001, and he currently has responsibility for specialized regional surgical services – including neurosurgery, spine surgery, robotic surgery, bariatric surgery and complex oncologic surgery.
He directs the assessment and deployment of clinical technology equipment across Northern California, and is leading the effort in bringing innovative practices to specialty care through specialization and greater consistency of clinical practices.
He is also focused on using information and communication technologies to further enhance and advance specialty practice in Kaiser Permanente.
For the past 30 years, Dr. Chang has held numerous leadership roles with TPMG, including the chief of Anesthesia and assistant physician-in-chief. He also led the deployment of Kaiser Permanente Northern California’s integrated electronic medical record system, KP HealthConnect.
Dr. Chang earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his residency training at Stanford University Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and anesthesiology.
