Each year, The Permanente Medical Group celebrates a group of physicians who stand out for their contributions in research and teaching. Five physicians recently received these awards for 2024.
Morris F. Collen Research Award
Three physicians received research awards named for Morris F. Collen, MD, one of the 7 founding physicians of The Permanente Medical Group. Dr. Collen passed away in 2014 at the age of 100.
Gillian Kuehner, MD, a surgeon in the Napa-Solano service area, received the Morris F. Collen Research Award for Career Contribution for her work around breast cancer. Two physicians, Calvin Kuo, MD, a spine surgeon in Oakland, and Matthew Solomon, MD, PhD, FACC, an Oakland cardiologist, both received the Morris F. Collen Research Award for Recent Publication. Dr. Kuo was honored for his reassuring work around the safety of lumbar spinal fusion surgery for adults who are 80 and older. Dr. Solomon was recognized for his research around timing of open heart surgery for patients with aortic aneurysms.
Teaching Award for Excellence in Medical Education
Two physicians received teaching awards, which honors physicians who make significant contributions to the clinical education of their colleagues and graduate medical education of Kaiser Permanente residents.
Marcos Siqueiros, MD, an internal medicine physician in Santa Clara, received the Teaching Award for Excellence in Continuing Medical Education for his leadership around gender affirming care, LGBTQ+ health, and long COVID medicine. Brian Lin, MD, an emergency medicine physician in San Francisco, received the Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education, for developing a comprehensive curriculum and mentorship program for third-year medical students.
